According to the legend of Positano, the town was founded by some inhabitants of Paestum, who were escaping from the attack of some Saraceni (pirates of the middle ages).

The first official information about Positano's existence comes from some ancient Roman documents, but some artifacts from the Palaeolithic Era were found in Positano, testifying to a much more ancient origin of the settlement.
